Lumail vs Flodesk: Which Email Platform Fits How You Work?

Flodesk is design-first email with checkout, priced by subscribers. Lumail bills by emails sent and lets agents operate workflows and transactional email.

Lumail vs Flodesk: Which Email Platform Fits How You Work?
In this guide

Flodesk is a design-first email marketing tool for creators and small businesses, priced by active subscribers with unlimited sends; Lumail is an email platform priced by emails sent, built so AI agents and developers can operate it. Flodesk makes every email, form, and sales page look like your brand. Lumail makes the whole account programmable.

Flodesk bundles branded emails with forms, landing pages, link-in-bio, and a native checkout, for owners who run their own marketing. Lumail is built for teams whose email work runs through assistants, terminals, and product code as much as through a visual editor. Flodesk facts here come from its official pricing page as of August 2026; plans change, so check before you buy. For the compact version, see the side-by-side comparison table.

Choose Lumail if AI agents should operate your email

Flodesk has an official MCP server for Claude and ChatGPT at no extra cost, but it is read-only today: an assistant can report on emails, subscribers, and workflows, not change them. It also offers Flodesk Studio, a separate AI design app, and a REST API on paid plans for subscribers and segments. The API cannot send email.

Lumail exposes 89 organization-scoped MCP tools covering campaigns, subscribers, tags, segments, workflows, templates, analytics, and transactional sending. The same operations run in ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, and Cursor, and through a CLI, a TypeScript SDK, and a REST API. An agent can act on your account, not only read it.

In practice you can ask an assistant to:

  • draft next week's campaign from a brief and your existing template;
  • tag and segment subscribers before a targeted send;
  • build a workflow graph and explain each branch;
  • send a receipt or password reset from your product.

Choose Lumail if you want write access for agents, transactional email in the same account, or a bill that does not grow with every subscriber you store.

Choose Flodesk if your brand is the product

Flodesk is excellent at one thing Lumail does not try to do: making email look like a designed, on-brand object. For many creators, that is the whole point.

Choose Flodesk if:

  • custom fonts, precise layouts, and on-brand forms and sales pages matter most;
  • you want forms, landing pages, link-in-bio, and Stripe checkout without a separate store;
  • you would rather pay by list size and send as often as you like.

Lumail does not offer native checkout, sales pages, or link-in-bio. It provides capture pages for subscriber acquisition, with its focus on audiences, workflows, delivery, and agent access.

Compare the pricing models, not the starting prices

Flodesk charges by active subscribers. Unsubscribed and bounced contacts do not count, and every paid plan includes unlimited sends. There are three plans, with published starting prices for up to 1,000 subscribers:

  • Lite: $25 a month, or $19 billed yearly, with one workflow and a 25,000-subscriber ceiling;
  • Pro: $28 a month, or $25 billed yearly, with unlimited workflows and one checkout;
  • Everything: $54 a month, or $49 billed yearly, with unlimited checkouts and sales pages.

Prices rise as your list grows. Flodesk's own comparison puts Pro at $127 a month for 20,000 subscribers.

Lumail charges by emails sent and never by stored subscribers:

  • Free: 3,000 emails per month, no credit card;
  • Premium: $20/month with 40,000 emails included, then $0.60 per 1,000;
  • Business: $200/month with 400,000 emails included, then $0.40 per 1,000.

A worked example

Say you have 20,000 subscribers and send a weekly newsletter to the whole list, so about 80,000 emails a month.

On Lumail, that is Premium: $20 for the first 40,000 emails, plus 40,000 more at $0.60 per 1,000, which is $24. Total: $44 a month.

On Flodesk Pro, 20,000 subscribers is $127 a month, and you could send as much as you want.

That last part matters. If you emailed the same 20,000 people every day, about 600,000 emails a month, Lumail Business would cost $200 plus 200,000 emails at $0.40 per 1,000, so $280. Flodesk would still be $127. Flodesk's model wins for lists you email constantly; Lumail's wins for lists you email selectively.

Compare automation and transactional email

Flodesk's workflows are well designed. They start from a segment, a form signup, a purchase, or an abandoned cart, with up to six triggers per workflow. Steps include emails, delays, yes/no and multi-branch splits, and segment updates, and branches rejoin the main path automatically. The limit is the plan: Lite allows one workflow, and abandoned-cart flows need Everything.

Lumail's workflow engine is graph-based and included on every plan, including Free. It supports subscriber, tag, event, schedule, and manual triggers; email, wait, action, and webhook steps; condition and weighted branches; and goals and exit rules. Agents can read and edit the same graphs through MCP, the CLI, the SDK, and the API.

Flodesk does not offer transactional email. Its checkout sends order receipts to buyers, but there is no API or SMTP for password resets or product notifications. Lumail sends transactional email through the REST API or smtp.lumail.io:587 with STARTTLS, in the same organization as your campaigns.

Migrating from Flodesk to Lumail

  1. Export subscribers and segments. Export active subscribers with their segments, plus unsubscribes and bounces, so they are suppressed in Lumail from day one.
  2. Authenticate your sending domain. Set up SPF and DKIM in Lumail and verify the domain while Flodesk keeps sending.
  3. Rebuild your key templates. Flodesk's API does not export campaign designs, so recreate the templates you reuse most in Lumail's editor.
  4. Recreate workflows as graphs. Rebuild your welcome workflow first and test it with a few addresses.
  5. Decide where checkout lives. If you sell through Flodesk Checkout or sales pages, set up a replacement store before you cancel, since Lumail offers capture pages, not a checkout.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lumail a Flodesk alternative?

Yes, if you want programmable email more than brand design. Flodesk is a design-first suite with forms and checkout, billed by subscribers; Lumail bills by emails sent and adds transactional email and write-capable agent tools.

Is Lumail cheaper than Flodesk?

It depends on how often you send. At 20,000 subscribers and a weekly newsletter, Lumail is $44 a month versus $127 on Flodesk Pro. If you email a large list every day, Flodesk's unlimited sends can be cheaper.

What is the main difference between Lumail and Flodesk?

Flodesk treats email as a brand surface and bundles commerce, with a read-only MCP. Lumail treats email as a programmable system, with 89 MCP tools that can operate campaigns, workflows, and transactional email.

Can I migrate from Flodesk to Lumail?

Yes. Export subscribers, segments, and suppressions, authenticate your domain, and rebuild emails and workflows in Lumail. Checkout and sales pages need a separate home.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Flodesk if your emails are part of your brand, you sell directly from them, and you want to send as often as you like for a price that follows your list.

Choose Lumail if you want agents to operate your email, your product needs transactional email, or you store a large list that you email selectively.
