Lumail vs Mailjet: Which Email Platform Fits How You Work?
Mailjet saves automations for its Premium plan and offers read-only MCP. Lumail includes graph workflows on every plan and 89 MCP tools agents can act with.

In this guide
Mailjet is Sinch's email marketing platform and sending API, pairing a collaborative drag-and-drop editor with transactional email over API and SMTP, hosted in the EU. Lumail covers the same ground, campaigns plus transactional email in one account, but includes graph workflows on every plan and lets AI agents operate the whole platform.
The two are closer than most comparisons in this series. Both price by email volume, both send marketing and transactional email from one account, and both have an MCP server. The differences are where automation sits, what an agent can actually do, and how contacts are capped on the cheaper plans. Mailjet facts in this comparison come from its official pricing page as of August 2026. For the compact version, see the side-by-side comparison table.

Choose Lumail if AI agents should operate your email
Mailjet offers a REST API, SMTP, official SDKs for seven languages, and AI writing help in the editor from the Essential plan. It also ships an open-source MCP server for Claude Desktop, but it is read-only: an assistant can look at contacts, campaigns, segments, stats, and workflows, but cannot send email or change anything. There is no ChatGPT app or first-party CLI.
Lumail exposes 89 organization-scoped MCP tools covering campaigns, subscribers, tags, segments, workflows, templates, analytics, and transactional sending, and they can act, not only read. They work in ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, and Cursor, alongside a CLI, a TypeScript SDK, and a REST API. Every tool is scoped to your organization, so an agent works with your real audience and real campaign state.
In practice, you can ask an assistant to:
- draft next week's campaign from a brief and your existing template;
- create a segment of subscribers who clicked but never purchased;
- build a welcome workflow and explain each branch;
- send a transactional test and check its delivery;
- summarize last month's results without exporting a CSV.
Sending and scheduling stay behind human approval. That is the practical gap: with Mailjet, an agent can tell you what happened; with Lumail, it can also prepare what happens next.
Choose Mailjet if you want an EU-hosted, collaborative ESP
Mailjet is a mature platform with more than 100,000 customers, EU data centers, and GDPR, ISO 27001, and SOC 2 positioning, which matters for European teams with strict data requirements. Its editor supports real-time collaboration and MJML, so marketers and developers can work on the same templates. Its free plan also sends more than Lumail's: 6,000 emails a month against 3,000.
It also has features Lumail does not. Premium plans add landing pages and A/B testing, inbound email parsing from the 50,000-email tier, and a dedicated IP from the 100,000-email tier. Mailjet also offers an SMS API. Lumail has no inbound email routing, does not sell dedicated IPs, and does not send SMS.
Choose Mailjet if:
- you need EU hosting and a collaborative editor with MJML support;
- you want landing pages, A/B testing, and SMS alongside email;
- you need inbound email parsing or a dedicated IP at higher volumes.
Compare the pricing models, not the starting prices
Both products price by email volume, so the details that matter are the plan gates.
Mailjet's free plan sends 6,000 emails a month with a 200-per-day cap and 1,000 contacts. Starter costs $9/month for 8,000 emails and up to 2,000 contacts. Essential starts at $17/month for 15,000 emails with unlimited contacts. Premium, which adds automations and landing pages, starts at $27/month for 15,000 emails and scales to $55 for 50,000 and $105 for 100,000. Extra email on the 15,000 tiers costs $2.58 per 1,000. Paying yearly saves 10%.
Lumail prices on emails sent, with unlimited subscriber storage on every plan:
- Free: 3,000 emails per month, no credit card;
- Premium: $20/month with 40,000 emails included, then $0.60 per 1,000;
- Business: $200/month with 400,000 emails included, then $0.40 per 1,000.
A worked example
Say you have 5,000 subscribers, send a weekly newsletter (about 20,000 emails a month), and want a welcome sequence.
On Mailjet, the welcome sequence needs Premium. Premium 15k is $27 plus 5,000 extra emails at $2.58 per 1,000, so about $39.90 a month, or $55 on the Premium 50k tier. Without automation, Essential 15k would be about $29.90.
On Lumail Premium, 20,000 emails fall inside the 40,000 included, so the month costs $20, with workflows and unlimited subscribers included.
If you send fewer than 6,000 emails a month and need no automation, Mailjet's free plan goes further than Lumail's. Past that, Lumail's larger included volume and lower overage usually win.
Compare automation and transactional email
Mailjet has a capable visual automation builder, with triggers for list sign-ups, contact updates, opens, clicks, and events sent from your app, plus conditions, timers, and exits. The catch is that it starts at Premium, and downgrading from Premium pauses your active workflows.
Lumail's workflow engine is graph-based and included on every plan, including Free: subscriber, tag, event, schedule, and manual triggers; email, wait, action, and webhook steps; condition and weighted branches; goals and exit rules. The same workflows are readable and editable from the app, MCP tools, CLI, SDK, and API.
Transactional email is a genuine strength for both. Mailjet sends it from the same account and plan as marketing, through its Send API or SMTP. Lumail does the same through its REST API or SMTP relay at smtp.lumail.io:587 with STARTTLS, in the same organization as your newsletters.
Migrating from Mailjet to Lumail
The move is a standard platform switch; the main work is rebuilding automations.
- Export contacts and suppressions. Export your contacts from Mailjet, including unsubscribes and bounces, and import them into Lumail so past exclusions carry over.
- Authenticate your sending domain. Set up SPF, DKIM, and DMARC for Lumail and verify the domain. Keep Mailjet live while DNS propagates.
- Rebuild your workflows. Recreate each Mailjet automation as a Lumail graph, then test it with a few subscribers. There is no one-click importer.
- Move transactional sending. Point app email from Mailjet's API or SMTP to Lumail's API or
smtp.lumail.io:587. - Send one campaign and connect your agents. Send to a consented segment, check rendering and unsubscribe links, then run one real task through MCP.
