Lumail vs Postmark: Which Email Platform Fits How You Work?
Postmark is a transactional sending API with no list or campaign builder. Lumail runs newsletters, workflows, and transactional email in one place.

In this guide
Postmark is ActiveCampaign's transactional email service: a fast API and SMTP relay for password resets, receipts, and app notifications, with broadcast email kept on separate infrastructure. Lumail is an email platform: newsletters, subscribers, graph workflows, and transactional email in one organization that AI agents can operate.
Postmark says plainly that it is not a traditional marketing platform. It has no list uploads, no visual campaign builder, and no campaign reports, and your main list lives outside it. So the question is whether you only need a reliable pipe for app email, or also a place to run the newsletter and lifecycle email around it. Postmark facts in this comparison come from its official pricing page as of August 2026. For the compact version, see the side-by-side comparison table.

Choose Lumail if AI agents should operate your email
Postmark takes AI tooling seriously for a sending service. It ships a local MCP server with 24 tools for sending, templates, bounces, suppressions, and delivery diagnosis, plus agent skills for coding assistants, a CLI, and official SDKs. There is no hosted MCP or ChatGPT app. The tools are about sending and debugging mail, because Postmark does not store your list or run campaigns.
Lumail exposes 89 organization-scoped MCP tools covering campaigns, subscribers, tags, segments, workflows, templates, analytics, and transactional sending. They work in ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, and Cursor, alongside a CLI, a TypeScript SDK, and a REST API. Every tool is scoped to your organization, so an agent works with your real audience, not just the send log.
In practice, you can ask an assistant to:
- draft a changelog email from release notes and your approved template;
- segment subscribers who signed up this month but never activated;
- read an onboarding workflow and explain why a user skipped a step;
- send a transactional test and check how it was delivered;
- summarize last month's campaign results in plain language.
Sending and scheduling stay behind human approval. The difference is scope: in Lumail, the agent can operate the newsletter and the lifecycle email, not only the pipe underneath them.
Choose Postmark if app email is the whole job
Postmark has built its reputation on deliverability for transactional mail. It keeps transactional and broadcast email on separate infrastructure so a newsletter never slows down a password reset, it publishes inbox-provider stats, and it keeps 45 days of full message content for debugging.
It also covers things Lumail does not. On its Pro and Platform plans, Postmark parses inbound email into JSON and posts it to your application. It sells dedicated IPs from $50 per IP per month once you send 300,000 or more emails a month. Lumail has no inbound email routing and does not sell dedicated IPs.
Choose Postmark if:
- transactional email from your application is the whole product you are buying;
- your lists already live in your app and you only need API, SMTP, and webhooks;
- you need inbound email parsing or dedicated IPs at high volume.
Compare the pricing models, not the starting prices
Both products bill by email volume, not by subscriber. The difference is how much volume each price includes.
Postmark's free Developer plan includes 100 emails a month and never expires. There is no paid tier between 100 and 10,000 emails. Every paid plan includes 10,000 emails: Basic at $15/month with extra email at $1.80 per 1,000, Pro at $16.50/month with extra email at $1.30 per 1,000, and Platform at $18/month with extra email at $1.20 per 1,000. Pro and Platform add inbound processing. Billing is monthly only.
Lumail prices on emails sent, with unlimited subscriber storage on every plan:
- Free: 3,000 emails per month, no credit card;
- Premium: $20/month with 40,000 emails included, then $0.60 per 1,000;
- Business: $200/month with 400,000 emails included, then $0.40 per 1,000.
A worked example
Postmark's own support documentation uses this one: 25,000 emails in a month on Basic. That is $15 for the first 10,000 plus 15,000 × $1.80 per 1,000, so $42.
On Lumail Premium, 25,000 emails fall inside the 40,000 included, so the month costs $20, with the editor, subscriber database, and workflows included.
At very low volume Postmark can be cheaper: a 10,000-email month is $15 on Basic versus $20 on Lumail. Past that, Postmark's per-1,000 rate is two to three times Lumail's, so the gap widens quickly. Model a normal month and a launch month on both pricing pages.
Compare automation and transactional email
Postmark has no automation builder. Postmark's own documentation is clear that marketing-style messages still have to be sent from your application, and that you manage the main list outside Postmark. Welcome sequences, waits, and branches are code you write and maintain. Zapier and ActiveCampaign can trigger Postmark sends if you want a no-code hook.
Lumail's workflow engine is graph-based and included on every plan: subscriber, tag, event, schedule, and manual triggers; email, wait, action, and webhook steps; condition and weighted branches; goals and exit rules. Your team edits sequences in the app, and agents read and edit the same graph through MCP.
Transactional email is Postmark's core strength. Lumail sends transactional email through its REST API or SMTP relay at smtp.lumail.io:587 with STARTTLS, in the same organization as your newsletters, so receipts and campaigns share one domain setup and one subscriber database.
Migrating from Postmark to Lumail
Postmark does not store your main list, so the move starts wherever your list lives today.
- Export recipients and suppressions. Export your list from your app or database, and export Postmark's bounces and suppressions so past exclusions carry over.
- Authenticate your sending domain. Set up SPF and DKIM in Lumail and verify the domain. Keep Postmark live while DNS propagates.
- Rebuild one sequence as a workflow. Recreate your onboarding logic from code as a graph, then test it with a few subscribers.
- Decide where app email lives. Point transactional sends at Lumail's API or SMTP, or keep Postmark for product email and move only the newsletter.
- Send one campaign and connect your agents. Send to a consented segment, check rendering and unsubscribe links, then run one real task through MCP.
